Abstract

The rapid growth of Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) services among Generation Z has raised concerns about increasing indebtedness due to easy access and flexible payment features. Without adequate financial literacy, self-control, and appropriate attitudes toward debt, Generation Z is more vulnerable to excessive borrowing behavior. This study aims to analyze the effect of financial literacy, self-control, and debt attitude on the propensity to indebtedness among Generation Z students using BNPL. This research employed a quantitative approach with a survey method involving 318 Generation Z students from the 2023 cohort at Universitas Siliwangi, selected through simple random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results show that financial literacy, self-control, and debt attitude have a positive and significant effect on the propensity to indebtedness, both partially and simultaneously. These findings indicate that cognitive and behavioral factors play an important role in shaping Generation Z students’ tendency to incur debt in BNPL usage.
